FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Date: 02/14/11 Time: 8:20 P.M.

Rock Slide & Highway 50 Road Closure

At about 4:12 PM on February 14, 2011, Colorado State Patrol troopers from the Florence office and Salida office responded to a rock slide on Highway 50 near MP 244. This location is approximately 4 miles east of Coaldale and one mile west of Cotopaxi.

U.S. Highway 50 will be closed for an undetermined amount of time, due to the rock slide that has completely covered the roadway.

At the location of the rockslide, U.S. Highway 50 is covered by rocks of various sizes to a height of approximately 20 feet. The stability of the remaining rock face that the slide came from is unknown, and must be assessed before the debris can begin to be cleared.

There are no county or local roads that can be used to by-pass the closure. CDOT has placed road closures at the intersection of Hwy 50 & Hwy 9 (Royal Gorge), Hwy 50 & Hwy 69 (Texas Creek), and Hwy 50 & Hwy 285 (Poncha Springs). VMS boards have been activated. Motorists are advised to check the CDOT website at www.cotrip.org for further information.
