Douglas County Fatal Crash

On 4/12/11 at approximately 8:23 P.M. Colorado State Troopers responded to a four-vehicle crash resulting in one fatality in Douglas County.

A 2000 International semi tractor-trailer was traveling southbound Interstate 25 at mile marker 189, hauling logs, when it experienced a mechanical failure. The Semi was driven onto the left shoulder where it stopped. A green 2000 Jeep Cherokee was traveling southbound Interstate 25 in the left lane. The front left side of the Jeep struck the right rear of the semi trailer. The Jeep then spun into the adjoining lane and struck 2 other vehicles, a 2001 Honda Civic and a 2007 Infinity sedan which were also traveling southbound

The unidentified female driver of the Jeep was ejected during the crash sequence and was pronounced dead on scene. The male driver and female passenger of the Honda were transported to Littleton Hospital with moderate injuries. The male driver of the Infinity was uninjured in the crash.

Interstate 25 was closed southbound at Ridgegate Parkway for several hours while the crash was being investigated.

This crash remains under investigation.

Rock Slide & Highway 50 Road Closure

At about 4:12 PM on February 14, 2011, Colorado State Patrol troopers from the Florence office and Salida office responded to a rock slide on Highway 50 near MP 244. This location is approximately 4 miles east of Coaldale and one mile west of Cotopaxi.

U.S. Highway 50 will be closed for an undetermined amount of time, due to the rock slide that has completely covered the roadway.

At the location of the rockslide, U.S. Highway 50 is covered by rocks of various sizes to a height of approximately 20 feet. The stability of the remaining rock face that the slide came from is unknown, and must be assessed before the debris can begin to be cleared.

There are no county or local roads that can be used to by-pass the closure. CDOT has placed road closures at the intersection of Hwy 50 & Hwy 9 (Royal Gorge), Hwy 50 & Hwy 69 (Texas Creek), and Hwy 50 & Hwy 285 (Poncha Springs). VMS boards have been activated. Motorists are advised to check the CDOT website at www.cotrip.org for further information.

**Updated Release** Head-on Crash on Hwy 85 In Douglas County

**UPDATE**

Yesterday afternoon at about 4:12 p.m., Colorado state troopers were dispatched to a head-on crash on Highway 85 south of Titan Rd. in Douglas County. Troopers have determined that a Mercedes, driven by Connie Underwood, 56, of Castle Rock, was traveling southbound on Highway 85 when the vehicle entered a curve, went off the right side of the road before swerving into the northbound lanes and striking a northbound Jeep head-on.

The driver of the Jeep, Claude Bounds, 69, of Castle Rock, died at Swedish hospital after being airlifted from the crash scene with serious injuries. The Jeep’s front seat passenger, Carolyn Bounds, 64, of Castle Rock, died at Littleton Adventist Hospital shortly after the crash. A 4-year-old child in the Jeep suffered only minor injuries. All occupants of the Jeep were properly restraint with seatbelts, or child restraint systems.

The driver of the Mercedes was also transported Swedish Medical Center with serious injuries.

Troopers are investigating the use of alcohol and/or drugs as a contributing factor to this crash. Criminal charges will be filed pending further investigation.

Troopers Investigate Head-on Crash on Hwy 85 In Douglas County

This afternoon at about 4:12 p.m., Colorado state troopers were dispatched to a head-on crash on Highway 85 south of Titan Rd. in Douglas County. Troopers have determined that a Mercedes was traveling southbound on Highway 85 when the vehicle entered a curve, went off the right side of the road before swerving into the northbound lanes and striking a northbound Jeep head-on.


The driver of the Jeep, an adult male, as been airlifted to Swedish hospital with serious injuries. The Jeep’s passengers, an adult female and a 3-year-old child have been transported via ambulance to area hospitals, also with serious injuries.
The female driver of the Mercedes was also taken to Swedish. Her condition is unknown.

Highway 85 is closed at this time during the investigation. It is anticipated that the road will be completely closed for at least one more hour, so motorists are encouraged to avoid the area. Traffic to the north of the crash scene is being diverted at Titan Rd. Motorist can use Highlands Ranch Parkway as an alternate route.

The exact cause of the crash is unknown at this time as the investigation continues.

CSP Seeks Witnesses in Fatal Hit and Run Crash Involving Pedestrian

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Date: 1/13/11 Time: 8:00pm

The Colorado State Patrol is seeking information about a crash that killed a young woman tonight in Adams County. The woman was approximately one-half mile south of E. 152nd Ave. on Piccadilly Rd, just after 6:00pm, when she was struck. An unidentified vehicle fled the scene after the crash. Currently, the Colorado State Patrol is in contact with witnesses and the driver of at least one vehicle. It is unknown at this time what caused the pedestrian to be in this area or what driving actions, if any, may have contributed to the crash.

If you have any information, or can identify the vehicle that was travelling in this area just after 6:00pm, please call the Colorado State Patrol Dispatch Center at 303-239-4501.

Piccadilly Rd. remains closed from E. 152nd Ave. to E. 145th Ave. for on-scene investigation. Updates will be released as they become available.
